NEW ZEALAND CUP CONTEST Prospects for Opening’ Day at Riccarton WELCOME STAKES AND STEWARDS Weather Outlook Good: Track Will be Fast (By Telegraph—From “The Watcher.”) Christchurch, November 3. The opening of the Canterbury Jockey Club s metropolitan meeting to-morrow at Riccarton looks likely to be favoured with exceptionally brilliant weather. The conditions during the week have been perfect, and it appears set fine. The track conditions will be excellent and the going fast. , , The principal events to-morrow will be the New Zealand Cup, Welcome Stakes and Stewards’ Handicap. As usual horses are on the scene from both north and south. The Cup field this year does not contain the usual quality, and with the handicap on a very low scale riders will be largely lightweight and apprentices. Still, the material is there, as it usually is, for a good contest. The North . Island is represented ..by four of the thirteen acceptors, but recent form suggests that • the prize will remain in the south. . In the Stewards’ Handicap, however, the North Island will be represented by the favourite in Golden Wings, who promises to make a big bid for victory. The only other North Islander, Passion Fruit, is sore. Croupier is owned in Wellington, but trained at Riccarton. He also will be one of the favourites. The North Island also looks likely to carry off the Welcome Stakes per medium of Coronilla, who has done well since her Trentham 'success. -

Very satisfactory acceptances have been received for the other events, and there is every prospect of a successful day’s racing. The meeting will be continued on Monday, wfcen the principal events will be the *New Zealand Derby and the Fendalton and Criterion Handicaps. To-morrow’s card and prospects are as follow:— 13.5 pun.— SPRING HURDLE HANDICAP, of 200

QUIET MORNING Inflation Goes Well RIDING ENGAGEMENTS (By Telegraph—From “The Watcher.”) Christchurch, November 3. Riccarton was quiet this morning so far as fast work was concerned. The most interesting gallop was that of Inflation over ten furlongs. Henry of Navarre went with him part of the way, but Inflation had to come home by himself. The gallop was on the trial grass, and the time, 2.14, is nothing out of the ordinary. Inflation, however, went well and appeared to pull up all right. Minerval went freely over his half-mile sprint, and is gaining in Cup favour. His trainer, the veteran Free Holmes, is no novice in the art of preparing gallopers. Those who expected a brilliant sprint from the Stewards’ favourite, Golden Wings, were disappointed, as he was not allowed to go at more than a good swinging pace, which he was always anxious to increase. Golden Chance, his two-year-old brother, is a bit sore, and. will not start ih the Welcome Stakes, in which the stable will rely upon Brown Betty. The latter looks well, and has improved with racing. Miladi and Prostration sprinted over four furlongs; both are well. Some Shamble was also responsible for a smart sprint. Niggerhead worked on the plough and bled very badly. Some difficulty was experienced in getting him back to the sheds. He has been scratched for the Linwood Handicap. There is talk now of putting up the southern apprentice. R. J. Mackie, on Southdown in the Cup, which will mean some overweight. Mackie is a stronger and more experienced horseman than the others available. Nothing, however, will be decided until the arrival of the owner, Mr. J. M. Samson. Following is a list of riding engagements :—■ Hurdles: Henry of Navarre, Bowden. Gold Knight, Salt; Rational 11, Veevers; Manuiri, Mcßrearty; Kapuna, Beale; Advance Camp, Tunaer; Gallivanter, Pratt; Sports King, Pascoe; Nightcap is doubtful, and Jenkins may get the ride on Revision. Spring Plate: Manetho, Wilson; Liege Lord, A. Eastwood; Bettwsycoed, W. H. Jones; Gipsy Love, G. J. Jones; Sweet Agnes, C. Eastwood. Linwood Handicap: Drum Fire, McCarthy ; Metal Bird, Green; Blazon, Beale; Berate, A. H. Igastwood; Emotion, B. H. tention among the sprinters and everything points to him being prominent. He will not, however, have quite such a comfortable race as he had at Trentham as this field contains some brilliant horses that will carry him along. Still, he is. real class and should prove a hard nut to crack. Croupier may turn the tables, but he has not impressed as ever likely to return to his once great form. Lordly Knight, Silver Streak, True Shaft, Cranford are lightweight possibles. The best backed may be Silver Streak, Golden Wings and Croupier. 5.20 p.m.— RICCARTON HANDICAP, of 200 sovs.

Silvox, Miladi, Forestry and Nightly all look possibles in the concluding event, while Monastic may surprise if he runs. Ranelagh does not race very reliably. The best backed may be Miladi, Silvox, and Nightly.

The suspension expires at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, so Ellis will be able to ride on the two concluding days of the meeting. The appeal was actually dismissed, but the judges stated that mitigating circumsthnces made the Dunedin decision rather severe. , FINAL GALLOPS Efforts on the Track By Telegraph.—Press Association, ’ ' Christchurch, Nov. 3. The weather was fine for training operations at Riccarton this morning. The inside of the trial grass track was open, but not many horses went there. Inflation ran a mile and a quarter in 2min. 14 2-ssec. Henry of Navarre accompanied him for the first five furlongs, and afterward jumped two hurdles well. Bodyline was much too good for Inveresk over half a mile in 51 2-ssec. Eminent and Forestry did strong work on the plough. Tout le Monde and The Masquerader went twice round on the No. 7 track at a sound pace. Ranelagh ran seven furlongs in lmin. 32 4-ssee., the last half-mile in 52see. Hurlingham went half a mile along the back in 48 2-ssec. Brambletorn did useful work, the last half-mile in 53 2-ssec. Miladi and Prostration ran half a mile in 49sec. Minerval. with Arrow Rose for the last three’ furlongs, ran half a mile in 49 3-ssec. . Walton Park and Dollar Prince went six furlongs in lmin. 19 4-ssee. Great Star and Double Shot ran three furlongs along the back in 37 3-ssec. Gipsy Love went five furlongs, the last half-mile in 49 l-ssec. Golden Wings took 50 2-ssec. for half a mile, and Brown Betty ran the distance in 50sec. Some Shamble ran half a mile in 48 3-ssec. Palantua and Blazon went the same distance in 48 2-ssec. Niggerhead bled during his work on the plough. Flying Amy, Irish Lancer. Last Link, Roland, and Queen of Song l have arrived from the south, and Knocklong from the West Coast. Niggerhead Scratched By Telegraph.—Press Association. Cliristchmrch, November 3. During a gallop on the plough, at Riccarton this morning Niggerhead suffered a bleeding attack, and waa scratched for the Linwood Handicap at 11.45. REDUCTION IN TERM Suspension of A. E. Ellis By Telegraph.—Press Association. „ Christchurch, November 3. In the'appeal of A. E. Ellis against the decision of the Dunedin District Committee, the Racing Conference judges have reduced the penalty of two months’ suspension imposed /n October 7 by tin: Dunedin Jockey Chib to one month’ The judges .state that mitigating circumstances in the case were apparently not fully given effect to by the Dunedin committee. Ellie will be able to rid at Riccarton on Wednesday.

WORK AT ELLERSLIE Some Horses Impressive By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, November 3. Although it was an off morning at Ellerslie, several horses were galloped on the No. 2 grass track this morning. The weather was fine and the going good, but there was a strong wind blowing down the straight. Riotous worked over six furlongs, and, going comfortably, ran the distance in Imin. 23 3-ssec. Star Artist came home from the three furlongs post in 40 3-ssee., doing it easily. Senegal finished up his work with an easy three furlongs in 43"1-ssec. Carfex was given strong work on the sand. He has done particularly well during the past week, and is expected to run a great race to-morrow. King's Archer went freely over five furlongs, running the first two in 25 2- and completing the task in Imin. 3 3-ssec. He put plenty of dash into his work. After commencing slowly over a round, Aga Khan covered his last six furlongs in Imin. 22 l-ssec. Royal Artist also did strong work, finishing up by running six furlongs in Imin. 18 3-ssee. Whenuakura went away from the fivefurlong post, and though not intended to go fast ran his last three furlongs in 37 3Gay Egypt reeled off three furlongs in 37see. He has not done much since racing at Paeroa and looks a little bit big in condition. Prolyxo, who is looking well, strode over six furlongs in Imin. 26 2-ssec. Psychologist shaped attractively over three furlongs in 36 3-osec. Porotiti was not doing his best to accomplish half a mile in 51 l-ssec. All Humbug worked particularly well over a round, running the distance in Imin. 44 3-seec., the last seven furlongs taking Imin. 32 2-ssec. and the final three furlongs 40sec. This was a good effort, and he was running on solidly at the finish. View Halloo did useful work, but was not out to make time. So far no definite arrangements have been made regarding a rider for this horse in the Mitchelson Cup. However, now that Lord Vai has been scratched, H. Wiggins will probably have the mount. Desert Star, who is looking well, worked soundly over a round, running home over the last three furlongs in 41 sec. Count Lendroff, after running two furlongs in 25 3-ssec., completed five furlongs in Imin. ssec., the last half-mile taking 50 4-ssec. Three Scratchings By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, November 3. Ellerslie scratchings are Trial Hurdles, Unoco; Guineas, Coronis; Welcome Stakes, Pound Sterling. The Muzurka colt in the Welcome Stakes is named Waitaka.

TROTTING NOTES New Zealand Cup Field FORM OF ACCEPTORS (By “Overcheek.”) In light-harness circles the principal topic of conversation these days is the New Zealand Trotting Cup, which is to be run at Addington on Tuesday next. Red .Shadow retains the position of favourite, and as he will be bracketed, with Royal Silk the pair will no doubt carry most money on the machine on the day of the race. On this occasion there are 12 acceptors, and of these seven contested the race last year, when the first four home were Harold Logan, Glenrossie, Roi I'Or and Red Shadow. The field this year is as follows, and in the case of the horses that raced last year I am showing, for purposes of comparison, their present and last year’s

From the foregoing will be seen that Royal Silk and Kingscraft now meet Roi I’Or on 36, and Harold Logan, Red Shadow and Glenrossie on 24 yards better terms, while Free Advice benefits to the extent of 12 yards from Red Shadow and Glenrossie, 24 from Roi I’Or, and 12 from Harold Logan. Red Shadow and Glenrossie meet Harold Logan on the same terms, but now receive an, extra 12 yards from Roi I’Or. The latter, however, now receives from Harold Logan only 24 yards as compared with 36 last year. This is due to the fact that since the last New Zealand "Cup Roi I’Or won the Gold Cup at Wellington in January from a 4.24 mark, and thus incurred a penalty of 12 yards at two miles. Winning and Placed Performances. For the information of readers I publish. below details of winning and placed performances of the Cup horses since November last, but in the case of Sir Guy and Mountain Dell I have only dealt with their performances since they qualified for New Zealand’s premier handicap :— Sir Guy: First, Addington, August, two miles.
