BACON IMPORTS
Voluntary Restriction Move Fails COMPULSION NECESSARY (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, November 1. Negotiations with the representatives of the Danish Government concluded yesterday morning, but no agreement was reached for a voluntary reduction of 16 per cent, in Danish bacon exports to Britain. During the afternoon the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Walter Elliot, met representatives of Holland, Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Sweden, Finland. Russia, Argentina, and the United States and explained tlie reasons necessitating the curtailment of foreign bacon supplies. An official statement was later issued by tlie Minister of Agriculture that “having regard to the large volume of contracts entered into by home producers for the delivery of pigs to bacon factories during the four months, November to February, it is necessary to secure a further reduction of 16 per cent, in the supplies of bacon from foreign sources. Proposals to that end were placed before representatives of the Governments concerned, and. while some were prepared to accept, others felt unable to do so voluntarily. “His Majesty’s Government therefore decided to proceed in accordance with the Agricultural Marketing Act. and an order effecting the necessary reduction in foreign supplies as from November 1, to take effect at the earliest practical date, will be made in a few days. It is hoped that it will be possible to preserve by agreement the basis on which the total permitted imports are at present allocated.” CHILLED MEAT MONOPOLY Breaking South America’s Grip London, November 1.
