At the municipal elections in over, three hundred cities and boroughs in England and Wales to replace onethird of tlie councils, the progress results are as follow:— . ■ Gains. Losses. Labour 180 5 Conservatives ... 6 112 Liberals ... 5 33 Independents .... 10 51 The remainder of the results will be declared to-day. Labour so.far has only secured .'control at Barnsley, Wailsend, Swansea, and Oldham. It has made considerable gains of seats at Burnley, Derby, Bolton, Sunderland, Salford, and Bootle. , The defeated candidates at Manchester include Lady Simon and Lord Stanley of Alderley (Liberals).

Labour at Oldlufm gained five seats from the Conservatives and two from the Liberals.

Mr. Herbert Smith, the miners’ leader, was defeated at Barnsley. Labour regained control of Sheffield, which it lost last year.
