German General Election Campaign HITLER USES AEROPLANE ‘ By Telegraph,—Press Assn. —Copyright (Received November 2, 7.30 p.m.). London, November 2. The Berlin correspondent of “The Times” says Herr Hitler and other leaders are energetically conducting the election campaign amid the greatest enthusiasm. They are flying in a large Junkers aeroplane, which accommodates a special bodyguard of Storm Troopers, and are visiting many cities. They are also motoring through beflagged streets lined with cheering people. Herr Hitler often returns to his state duties at Berlin at night time and restarts in the aeroplane the next day. APPEAL TO CATHOLICS Von Papen Issues Manifesto (Received November 2, 8 p.m.). Berlin, November 2. Dr. von Papen, in an election manifesto, calls on German Catholics to vote Nazi. He says: “Let nobody remain at home owing tio some petty grievance. AJI must contribute toward peace at home and abroad and toward Germany's further rise as a nation.” His appeal contrasts sharply with the address of Cardinal Bertram, Archbishop of Breslau, who expresses concerh for the future of Roman Catholicism under the Nazi regime. The Cardinal condemned the present custom of deriding the whole of Sunday to political and athletic manifestations. - THE PANTER CASE Release and Expulsion Berlin, November 1. Mr. Noel Panter, the “Daily Telegraph’s” Munich correspondent, will be released and expelled from Germany. Tlie State Attorney’s Department at Leipzig does not see a cause for prosecution, though it considers a further stay in Germany by Mr. Panter undesirable. EXILE’S OFFENCE Defrauds British Customs London, November 1. Duno Dickbofer, 36 years of age, a German, was fined £3681 for defrauding the Customs of £1275 by-importing German mechanical lighters . without paying duty. The prosecution characterised the offence as an abuse of British hoynitality. The lighters were received in Dublin, smuggled into Ulster, hidden in the seats of motorcars and thence to London. Dickhofer, also defrauded the Free .State Cus-" toms. The magistrate recommended Dickhofer’s deportation. The defence pleaded that he was not desirous of returning to Germany for political reasons.' ANTI-JEWISH MOVEMENT Appeal by General Smuts Cape Town, November 1. General Smuts, as Minister of Justice, appeals to South Africans to discourage anti-Jewish movements which are most sinister and dangerous, otherwise the participants will unexpectedly find themselves in trouble.
