HUTT VALLEY NEWS

The secretary of the Lower Hutt branch of the Red Cross Society gratefully acknowledges the receipt of parcels from the following Mesdames Wallace, Joyce, Burgess (senior), A. A. Davies, Collie. Miss Perry, the Belmont Women’s Institute, and several anonymous. . By advertisement iu this issue, residents at Eastbourne are reminded of the annual sale of work of St. Alban’s Church, which will be held on Saturday in the Parish Hall. The opening ceremony will take place at 2.30 p.m., and will" be' performed by Mrs. T. C. A. Hislop, Mayoress of Wellington. There will be a variety of stalls, including fancy art. Just as. the Mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr. J. W. Andrews, was proposing the health of "The Brigade” at the Lower Hutt Volunteer Fire Brigade’s reunion last evening, the lights fused, and the health was drank in the darkness. The proceedings were not allowed to slacken, and the time passed pleasantly, with community sinking. Hopes of illumination were raised several times during the twenty minutes of darkness, only to be dashed as the lights flickered out again. On one occasion their approach was heralded by the frantic ringing of the fire-bell, which was found to be a false alarm, much to the relief of the brigade.
