Courageous Finish HEAD VICTORY Beats Good Class Field By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. • ' Baltimore, November 1. Winooka, after two failures in the Eastern States, rehabilitated himself in public esteem at Pjinlico to-day by scoring a narrow but meritorious victory m the six-furlong Baltimore Handicap. He was conceiling weight to six high-class American sprinters, and he had to step Imin. 11 i-ssec. to win by a head from Gold Step, with Tambour and Character Snly heads further away, and Spring Steel, Good Advice, and Okapi following close behind. , The result of the race was:—

Winooka had to display all his reputed gameness tp succeed. He drew No. 6 position, next to the optsjfle, _ and he broke with his field, btU his rider (E. Britt) did not rush him in the early part, allowing him to settle into his best stride before beginning his real effort on jiim. Over the final furlong he finished just too stoutly for his opponents. Character, from the outside, cut out the early running. Midway along the back stretch’ Character was leading Gold Step, Spring: Steel and Winooka, with tbfi Australian horse at least four lengths from the leader. Just after passing the half-mile Britt asked his mount for a little more speed, apd Winpqkq began picking up ground on the leaders. In contrast to his last race, when Britt steered the horse along the inner rail, Winooka kept on the outside. He was forced to circle several horses on the turn pnd came very wide into the stretch, which cost him a lot of ground. When straightened into the stretch, however, Winooka responded willipgly tp hard urging. Steadily be jvore the leaders down, and he got up in time to win by a head from Gold Step and Tambpur, with the paoemaking Character just weakening into fourth place. Winooka appeared to want to lug out in the run through thp strqtcb, Brrit was driving fiard at the end tp fight off Gold Step and Tambour. Character did pot falter until he reached inside the final furlong. Spring Steel, loomed dangerously as the field swung into the stretch, but he was unable to maintain the pace when driven hard oter the last half-furlong. Tambour came from far back, , ~ Winooka’s victory netted his owners 2550 dollars. The Pimfleo track was faster than it had heep for many years. Fractional two-furlong times were: 23see., 462-ssec., and Imin. 11 Lfisec., the full time being only 2-ssee. slower than the track record.
