THE RACING WORLD

CUP AND STEWARDS — ■ Riccarton Problems LIKELY FAVOURITES Palantua & Golden Wings (By Telegraph—From “The Watcher.”) t Christchurch, November 2. There was nothing sensational at Riecarton ..this morning, but a good deal of. solid galloping, all the Cup horsey except Inflation and Minerval being seeii in action. Inflation arrived this morning, while Minervgl galloped yesterday. The most impressive Cup efforts yrere those of Palantua, Southdown, Rocket ami Epigram. Palantua. in her gallop, went well, finished solidly, and pulled up well, her milt being the best from the time .test. As She went after breakfast under perfect asmospheric conditions she hijfl a-lot in her'favour,'but at the same time her efforts were excellent. Her trainer,-F. Shaw, is particularly pleased with his Cup mare. He says she has done a wonderful preparation, never had an idle hajf-hour, and answered all questions asked of her. ' Apart from all this he is relying; very largely upon her twelve-fur-long trial before leaving home, which more than satisfied him. Palantua looks like being the Cup favourite, and her c? n ’ nection# will senfl hgr-to the post with full confidence. ,« , i* , , Southdown’s effort over nine furlongs whs a good one. it being the furthest distance over which he has yet been tried. He did the outside running all the AVJI.V, way going best at the finish, and running on. His condition leaves nothing to he desired, and he has done well all along. There may be a doubt about him over two miles, as he has been prepared for the Derby, but if he can run a mile and a half with 8.10 up on Monday, two miles under 7 stone a couple, of days earlier should not be beyond him, although he will, of course, be meeting seasoned and older horses. Southdown represents class in an otherwise moderate Cup field, and if he can run on he should be hard "to beat. There is no riding engagement-yet made. The hopes built upon Broughton have not materialised, as he will-not be at the meeting, and the mount will probably go to H. Maekinnon, one of F. D. Jones's apprentices. Southdown is not the ideal mount for an apprentice, but it is the best that can be done. Epigram's Ten Furlongs, Epigram created a favourable impress Bion by the way he- put in his 1 final dab at the finish of his ten furlongs, but he appeared to have had enough when ■ he pulled tip. He may go well in the Cup, but it lodks like Southdown being the better three-year-old. W, E. Pine has an engagement to ride Epigram, but the owner-trainer, J. f McLaughlin, stated this morning that if G. J- Jones could do 7.2 on the day, which will mean 21b. overweight, he would put him up. Eminent , did not impress as having particularly good Cup prospects after bis gallop this morning. He was unable to hold Epigram, and blew a good deal afterward. Eminent,' who was eased up just prior to Wellington, looks short of only a few gallops. ' _ The Smuggler'was staying on well at the end of his gallop. He has a good record of placings in eup races in the South Island, and was second to Silver Scorn in the Dunedin Cup last autumn. The Smuggler will stay two miles, and might be a place possibility, but he does not appear good enough to win. Rocket put up a satisfactory gallop, sticking on well at the finish of a mile and a half with Rnmo, and haying the outside: running. He pulled up well. Some doubts are being cast on Rocket’s chances on account of lack of brilliancy, although there is no question that he will stay. I asked Arthur Eastwood this morning if his luck would still hold in the Cup, in which he has ridden two winners out of the last four races, but he doesn’t like his mount. He says | Minerval will win. As he rode Minerval in his gallop yesterday, ha should have some idea, but jockeys usually are. bad ' Judges, .

Brambletorn and Tout le Monde put up a fair gallop over a mile. Brambletorn’s spring form has been inconsistent, but the flashes of his best have been pretty good. His connections were expectwg a good race froip Mri Cup. put his work since ids arrival has not pleased them. His best form is his dead-beat with Takakua behind Cricket Bat at Trentham. ± Other Candidates.

Chrysology, on form and track work, *can have but rciuoto prospects oi landing the Cup. Jf he does, or runs a good race, It will he a surprUp. ' Jaloux has not made W friends. He looks fit and wefl), ami is capable enough, b’pt his record is against him, _ Ramo is a stayer who may be on the scene at the finish. He was a winner on Saturday, and was running on nicely at the end of his mile and ■ ft - wlh Rocket this morning. With practically all preparations com, plete, opinions regarding the open issue are unaltered, but the public choices look like being Ualantua. Southdown, apd Rocket, with Minerval to bring off a surPr *So far as the Stewards’ Handicap horses are concerned Golden Wings maintains his position ps favourite. He <lid not gallop fast this morn ng. Mt,ripden by T. Green, he pulled hard in . a round of pace work, Golden Wings is fit and well, and, apart from apytbmg ho may do when sprinted to-morrow morning, is not likely to be-ousted from his position as favourite. There has been nothing exceptional on the track from the leading sprinters, but one caught the eye this morning as likely to disturb the calculations of the supporters of Golden Wings- ‘This is the WajmateArained Silver Streak. ,-He just played with Kerbside jn their half-mile gallop’this 1 morning, and the time was ias good as has been done. On good authority I learn he put up a most satisfactory trifil op his hemp. track at Wai* mate before leaving for Riccqrton, His rape record |s also good, and his party is looking forward to the Stewards Handicap with the utmost confidence. Croupier’s Wind Trouble. Croupier retains his pace. His gallop this morning was not timed, but he went about six in his customary style, making plenty of noise. Croupier has the pace to be very prominent jn the Steward’s, but his wind trouble must tell against him as it has become very pronounced. In addition, while he has done satisfac- ' torily, he has not lost that rather listless l look that one expects to be absent from a horse fit to run for a big prize. Great Star's preparation has beep top long interrupted to give him much chance. He sprinted three furlongs this morning, 'but, prior to warming up, he was moving scratchily, ' . . Hurlingham did not impress in his work, but Lordly Knight is .fit and well. He blew a bit after his gallop this morning, hut this may have been due to pulling hard both prior to and during the gallop. He was ridden by the Trentham lightweight, S. Wilson, who will have the mount in the Stewards’, True Shaft is a lightweight possibility, He has done well since being narrowly defeated at Trentham by Lordly Knight, and, Although his times on the track are nothing sehsatiqnal, he- is improving. On this mornjng’s gallop, Kerbside has no” chance with Silver Streak. Guarantee ran smartly over four fiirlcmgs this morning. but his form does not suggest him as a Stewards’ winner. Passion Fruit has not been doing too well, as there has been a recurrence of soreness. He moved scratchily this morning,, although he went well enough in action with his mate, Emotion. in their gallop. Cranford is among the modest pretenders to Stewards’ honours. His gallop Over six furlongs was a fair effort, but he can do better than he has shown on the tracks. ■ ■ •-■■ . / • Red Manfred's Improvement. / Red Manfred has improved wonderfully since his Trentham racing. He was not worked fast this morning, but still was able to come home over the last half-mile of his work in 48sec, F. Davis is very pleased with the progress of his Derby candidate, who, in addition to improvement. is beginning to show a lot of I quality, Nightly moved scratchily again before going out to gallop. He was warmed -qp well by trotting on the inner. His gallop with Shatter was as good as was dope

during the morning. Shnller. in purlieular, went well, lie in to race Inter lit the meeting. Berate went well hi her gallop this morning. This mare is’improving fust, and will not be long. Mllndl and Bettwsycoed galloped, on the plough, which was very heavy. Miladi went very well, and Bettwsyeqed’s effort was satisfactory. Her knee is not. troubling hyr. Falkland was going well at. the cud of his gallop with Copyist. This Ihrco-ycar-old has not done much riteing. but lit! is a winner. On the way lie shaped tills morning he is a likely sort for the meeting. Kapuna gave a very sound display oyer six hurdles, being better than Gold Knight. Kapuna is safe and solid at his fences, and looks very fit. Revision, who went alone, gave n very moderate display, but she will go better in the race. T. R. George had hopes of putting up his recently returned jockey. Tucker, but ho is remaining in Auckland. Forestry whs pulled off in the straight in a gallop with Epigram and Eminent. Up to that stage he had, with the outside running, shaped well. Silvox has been working well, and looks a good prosnect for a race at tlie meeting. Errantry put up a good gallop for a hack on the plough this morning. Ho' litis plenty of pace, but docs not run on too Well. He is, however, in good order for racing. . Joyous, a green two-year-old by Chief Ruler opt of Limelight, is a likely-looking soft for later at the meeting, when he has had a little experience. Gaysome. who won at Motukarara on Saturday, has come on well since, and has been putting up fast times. ' Master Reynard, a two-year-old by Hunting Song from the Flaxmere marc Bayonne, will be having his first race in the Welcome Stakes He has no form, but is a big, well-grown gelding 1 , much resembling Pink Coat in colour, having a liberal sprinkling of grey hairs. He shows plenty of pace. Takakua Arrives. Although Takakua did not pay up for the New Zealand Cup he arrived this morning in company with Walton Park and. Dollar v Prince. Also on board were Flower, Inflation, Henry of Kavarre, Inveresk, and Bodyline. Inquiries during the last few daVs show that many trainers have not yet completed riding arrangements for the meeting. The supply of capable light-weight horsemen is not equal to the demand that exists for their services. The two-year-old filly Variant, by Limond from Motley, showed great promise early in the season, but a cold made it necessary to miss the Dunedin meeting, where it was thought she would run well jn the McLean Stakes. She had her first race. at Motukarara, where she gave a creditable showing, and the experience should help her to do even better at Riccarton, although she will be at a disadvantage in the Welcome Stakes as compared with others with more experience, TIMES on the track Gallops at Riccarton By Telegraph.—Press Association, <“■ Christchurch, November 2. Spiral and Hawthorn opened the proceedings. They went the first three furlongs' in 39 4-ssec. andi the full distance in Imin. 20sec. Hawthorn was eased up in the straight, anfl Spiral was a number of lengths in front at the finish. The Mitchelson Cup candidates Carfex and Red Sun, with Senegal, jumped away at the mile post. The first four furlongs took 51 l-Ssec. and the full distance Imin. 45 3-ssec. It was a good gallop, with Carfex going particularly well at the finish, though Red Sun, who was on the outside, also did the work impressively» Whenuakura, after running his first couple of furlongs in 24 3-ssec., reeled off half a mile in 50 3-ssec. He went from tlie mile to tlje half-mile post and did the work attractively. Pomp jumped away at the five furlongs post, ran the first two furlongs in 25sec,, and completed the task in Imin.. 5 3-ssec„ running on solidly at the finish. The horse is in great heart. View Halloo, Lord Vai, and All Humbug -were associated over the first half of a mile, taking 52 l-ssee. The full distance occupied Imin. 46 l-ssec. View Halloo was in front at the end, doing his work very impressively. Lord Vai was about two lengths away and a length in front of All Humbug. The last-named got his tongue over the bit, and this would probably account for his failure to make a better showing. Porotiti had Chief Cook as a companion over six furlongs. The first three took 39 l-ssec. and the full distance Imin. 19sec, They were together at the finish, though Porotiti, who wqs on the outside, appeared to be doing the better of tlie pair. After breakfast Kiltowyp gave Jewelled Girdle a several lengths! break at the six-furlong post, and was a shade in front ,at the finish. The time was Imin. 18 3-ssee. Baroscope worked over a round, but did not have much pace op till the last five furlongs, which he covered in Imin. 5 2-ssec. Jennings) went away near the mile post and jumped two fences on the h)H and the stone wall at the foot, being then pulled on to the course proper. It was a first-class display. Riotous (0. Thomson). Patutahi (Burgess), and Hunwai (I. Tucker) were associated in a round of the steeplechase eoprse. They commenced nt the sod wall, and, after jumping the fences on the flat, continued up the hill, Patutahi being pulled off at the top of the straight, the other pair again _ going over the fences on the flat. Riotous, who was having his first experience over the Ellerslie country, gave a fine exhibition and Patutahi also fenced satisfactorily. Hauwai, who was some distance back at the finish, hit the last obstacle, the stone wall, and dislodged his rider.

The arrivals this morning were Sea Fox, Davistock, Aga Khan, and Diagano.

AT TAKANINI , Speedmint Works Well By Telegraph.—-Press Association. Auckland, November 2. The inside grass was open for fast work at Takauini, the going being excellent. Exaggeration appeared to be doing a shade better than Greek Gold at the end of five furlongs. Both horses were in excellent order.
