CONTROL OF ROWING
Championships Allocated
VISIT FROM AUSTRALIA?
The New Zealand, championship rowing regatta was allocated to the Marlborough Association, to be rowed at Picton on February 17 next, at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Rowing Association held in the Accountants’ Chambers, Johnston Street, last evening. Mr. F. Haywood (Wanganui) presided over a full attendance of delegates. Applications were received from the Otago, Marlborough and Wellington associations for the Interprovincial championship “eights,” and these, on a vote being taken were allocated to the date being fixed for Easter Saturday, 1934. A remit from Wellington that the ■ interprovincial championship eights lie centralised in Wellington was rejected, as also was a remit from Canterbury that the interprovincial championship regatta be beard alternately at Picton and Wellington. Mr. T. M.-Hinkley, in moving Wellington’s remit, said, that while Otago might not be able to send an "eight to Auckland, or Auckland and Wanganui an “eight” to Otago, at all times the various "provinces would be able to be represented at Wellington. From the point of view of revenue, Wellington might be able to build up a fund to assist other associations coming to Wellington to participate. Mr. M. A. Turner (Canterbury) supported the remit from the point of view of economy, and because the majority of associations could be represented on a centralised course. Mr. D. R. Menzies (Auckland) considered the championships should be rowed at different parts of the Dominion so as to encourage the sport in the various centres. Mr. S. G. Styche (Otago) thought it would be-to ihc detriment of rowing to centralise the "eights.” A motion that the annual levy for the ensuipg year be 2/-, but that 6d. only be called up. was carried. Some discussion took place on the proposal to invite a crew of New South Wales oarsmen to New Zealand this season. After a long discussion it was decided that the council circularise the local associations asking whether, in the event of a visit, they could nominate It specified amount, and if the replies were favourable, the council could proceed with the invitation. Mr. G. Lauchlan said all associations. with the exception of Canterbury, were in favour of the visit, but the question was how much financial support could the council depend on receiving. He thought it would be a good thing for New Zealand rowing if the visit were made. Mr. R. G. Duncan thought it a fitting time for New Zealand to have competitiou from overseas crews. It would be an ideal opportunity for Dominion crews to be pitted against the best crew in Australia. The election of officers for the enduing year resulted as follows: — President. Mr. W. J. Girling (Marlborough); vice-presidents. Messrs. A. C. Norden (Auckland) and F. W. Mothes (Wellington) : council. Messrs. R. G. Duncan. T. M. Hinkley, and D. R. Menzies (Wellington), G. Lauchlan (Wanganui). 11. Pnton (Otago). A. Ross (East Coast), and M. A. Turner (Canterbury) : secretary and treasurer. Mr. A. D. Bayfield: auditor. Mr. W. S : Wheeler.
