CHURCH ADDITIONS
Kelburn Presbyterians ♦ ♦ * A CONTRACT LET The congregation of the Kelburn Presbyterian Church has increased in numbers to such an extent that it has been found necessary to increase considerably the size of the present church. A contract has been let to Mr. E. S. Griffin for the addition of transepts and a chancel together with a vestry and two classrooms below. These additions to the church have been designed by the architects, Messrs. Gray, Young, Morton and Young, in accordance with the latest ideas of Presbyterian worship in Scotland. After the Reformation tbe Church •of Scotland went to the extreme by omitting all decoration and symbolism in the churches, and, in consequence, the buildings became barn-like In their appearance. It is now recognised, however, that a religious atmosphere is essential for the effect it has on the members of the congregation. s To this end modern Presbyterian churches are following somewhat in plan the Anglican type by having a chancel end in which is placed the Communion table. Tbe pulpit is placed at one side and the lectern on the opposite side in line with the chancel arch. The font is generally at the side of this arch. The organ is placed in the chancel at one side and not at the back facing the congregation as has been so often the practice in the past. The additions to the Kelburn church have been planned on the foregoing lines with the choir placed at the side and in front of the chancel. The floor of the chancel is two steps above the floor of the church, and the Communion table is another step above this. A recess at the back of the Cbmmunlon table is to be covered with a tapestry curtain, over which will be placed a window in subdued colours. The walls are to be panelled to a height of seven feet. Two large circular-headed windows light the transepts. The glass in the existing windows of the church is to be taken out and replaced with leadlights. , A large ventilating fleche has been placed over the crossing of the transepts, and is covered in copper. The new additions are being built in wood to harmonise with the existing church.
