SEX OF OFFSPRING

Possible Effect of “Slimming” Ry Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, October 13. Discussing conclusions reached independently in Australia and in the entomological laboratories here to the effect that the sex ratio of insects can be markedly influenced by partial starvation of file larvae. Professor W. J. Monro, of tlie Imperial College of Science, told lhe "Morning Post” that the experiments were chiefly with lhe so-called flour beetle, and provided clear proof that in at least one form of life sex can be influenced by outside factors and this is done after fertilisation. “I suppose the results applied to human beings would be the possible preponderance of male births in war time due to food shortage. Equally the modern slimming of women might make the effect felt. Admittedly these are speculations, but in the present state of knowledge we ought not to close our minds to anything.”
