CONCERT OF MERIT
Given by “Honi Soit” Company FOR MAYOR’S RELIEF FUND A special entertainment in aid of the Mayor’s Relief Fund was given by Miss Jennie Benson, the principal members of the “Honl Soit” Company, and other artists, in the Grand Opera House last evening. The house was well filled by an exceedingly appreciative audience, which was treated to a varied programme of much merit. The opening number was an overture, “The Student Prince,” played by the 2YA Concert Orchestra, specially augmented, under the conductorship of Mr. Leon de Mauny. This was followed by three enjoyable mezzo-soprano solos, “Trees,” “Song of Songs,” and “leb Liebe,” by Miss Thelma Trott. Miss Ava Symons, the well-known Wellington violinist, played with much artistry “Meditation,” while Colin Crane scored an instant success with a bracket of solos, including “Lily of Laguna,” “Old Man River.” and “•.Mighty Like a Rose.” Miss Jennie Benson sang in her own inimitable way “Aren’t Women Wonderful.” “Love. You Funny Thing,” “I Don’t Know Why I Love You,” and “How Deep is the Ocean.” Miss Doran sang very charmingly “I Wonder if Love is a Dream,” “Pale Moon,” and “Was It a Dream?” and Dick Calvin played an enjoyable cornet solo, with orchestral accompaniment. Mr. Batchelor, pianist to the company, played some thoroughly enjoyable solos, and three items by the orchestra. “Morning, Noon, and Night Overture.” “Dance' of the Hours,” and “Songs of the Brave,” were very well received. Some of the orchestral items were played under the baton of Mr. E. Mario, musical director of the company, as guest conductor. A happy diversion in the programme was community singing, conducted by Mr. Owen Pritchard and Mr. Frank Crowther.
