BUTTER SURPLUS
Predicament of Canadian Prairie Provinces ‘‘EXPORT, EVEN AT A LOSS” By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Regina, September 13. With 9,000,000 pounds of butter surplus on August 1, the three Prairie Provinces, through the National Dairy Council, to-day appealed to the Government to assist export to Britain. The Prairie Provinces have made united efforts to induce manufacturers in Eastern Canada to export a fair quota of butter. These efforts started after the Canadian butter surplus of 9,000,0001 b. was announced last month. To this date the Western Provinces have received no indication that any butter would be shipped to the Old Country from the East, according to Mr. P. E. Reed, Provincial Dairy Commissioner, and the secretary of tlie Western Dairy Association. Mr. Reed said that Saskatchewan had shipped slightly more than a million pounds to the overseas market at a net loss which was heavier in the early shipments than in the later ones, the result of better prices being obtained in England. Alberta and Manitoba shipped similar quotas, he said. “We realised that unless something was done quickly, winter would come on with the Canadian manufacturers carrying a big surplus that would mean a further decline in prices,” said Mr. Reed. “We believed, and still believe, that the only thing to do was for each province to agree to export a certain quota, even if at a loss.”
