NEARING COMPLETION
Restoration of Clive Square Napier, September 14. The greater portion of the work involved in the restoration of Clive Square has now been completed. The construction of the new paths was finished yesterday, while the lawns have now been sown in grass and within a few weeks should present a pleasant sight. The boxing from the ornamental pond which forms the central feature was removed to-day and the construction of the rockeries is now in hand. In this connection a number of moss plants have been brought to Napier from Taupo and these will be planted as soon as the preparatory work is completed. Visitors to Napier who were familiar with the condition of the squares during the period when the temporary shops ■were in existence have frequently expressed surprise at the remarkable changes which have been brought about during the past year. Memorial Square, but for the Mothers’ Rest building, has now been returned completely to its former condition and it is anticipated that within a short time a start will bo made with the reconditioning of that structure itself. The matter was before the Napier City Council a few meetings ago and was then referred to a committee for further investigation. Since that time the committee has approached the Red Cross and Plunket Societies with a view to ascertaining their requirements in the new proposed building. As soon as a decision has been reached in regard to the lay-out of the interior, steps will be taken by the council to place the work in hand. It Is anticipated that the eost of reconstruction will be between £BOO and £lOOO.
