SEARCH FOR GOLD

Request for Assistance SCOPE FOR ACTIVITY Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, .September 14. In addressing members of Parliament at a pre-sessional meeting of the Otago Expansion League, the Mayor, the Rev. E. T. Cox, submitted a strong plea for Governmental assistance in the development of the gold-mining industry. In illustrating the use of modern plant and machinery, he said that between the years 1803 and 1900 gold to the amount of 487,000,0000 z. had been won from the earth, whereas between 1900 and 1932 the amount of gold won totalled no less than 623,000,0000 z. The Rand in Africa had played a big-part in securing the world’s stock of gold, for out of £6,000,000,000 represented by gold discoveries, ore to the value of £1,600,000,000 had come from that district. From a comparatively small and unimportant town Johannesburg had sprung into a city with a population of 400,000, the progress the place had made being directly due to the scientific development of the gold industry. The speaker was sure that there were tremendous fields waiting to be opened up f in New Zealand, particularly in Otago.
