TEAM FOR AUCKLAND

Wellington Table Tennis Representatives CONTEST AT WEEK-END The Wellington Table Tennis Association is sending a team to Auckland at the week-end to meet a northern representative team. The Wellington team will be the same as that which recently defeated Wanganui, with the exception of Williams, who is not available. Hie place will be taken by Hayvice. The members of the team are: Kennedy (Government Life) : The present provincial champion. Tho.ugh defeated by his team-mate, Williams, in the final of the invitation tournament held earlier in the season, he has since won all his games in the inter-club competition. He depends more for his success upon positional play, and footwork rather than upon any brilliant array of shots. Cheal (Customs) : Semi-finalist in _ the last two championships. His play is a judicious combination of defence and attack, and in form he has few equals. He is the possessor of a powerful forehand drive, and is now rapidly approaching his best form.. Before his arrival in Wellington he was one of Auckland’s leading players. '■ . ' Longmore (Printing): Also a semifinalist in the last two championships. A spin player who alternates deceptive chop shots with lightning top-spin drives. Due to his unorthodox methods he may be the most successful of the Wellington players on the northern trip. Hayvice (Stopout): A spectacular player with splendid footwork. With a little more match experience he must be regarded as a definite possibility for championship honours. Comments on Players. Possibly the most attractive player m the inter-club competition is Mills, of the Education “A” grade team. The possessor of powerful drives on both sides of the table, he is at present playing in brilliant form. ■■ ■ _ That a ■ player possessing ft natural adaptability will obtain prominence in almost any field of sport is again exemplified in the case of E. Tindill. Wellington’s representative half-back and wicketkeeper. This player, who relies almost entirely on spin, is one of the hardest men in Wellington to beat. Although lie does not possess to the same degree the topspin drive of his club-mate, Longmore, most, of his Opponents fall an easy prey to his heavily chopped returns. Several players in. the lower grades have achieved considerable success in the inter-dub competition, and. judging by their superiority over their opponents they would do well higher up. Among . the more outstanding are R. Howe (Wellington,), Bradshaw, (Stamp Duties), Howatson (Government Life), and Laking (Marine) in the B grade, Osbaldiston (Calvin Presbyterian) and F. Thompson (Crown) in the O grade. Education Department B team were unlucky to lose the services of Gibson, who, up to the time of his enforced spell, had a splendid record.
