Main Trunk Line Opening

Nothing has yet been decided upon by the Government in regard to the date or programme of the formal opening of the Main Trunk railway. Various suggestions have been made, one being that a celebration should be held at some place on the line half-way between Wellington and Auckland, another that a-special train should be run through, and a third that celebrations be held at Wellington and Auckland simultaneously. A suggestion has also been made that the function should be held at Te Awamutu, near where the first sod of the work was turned by Sir Robert Stout in 1885.

Herr Babel, leader of the Social Democrats in the Reichstag, replying to a communication from Mr. Ramsay MacDonald. Labour member of the House of Commons. says that he believes that war between Germany and Britain is possible, following the vehement preparations that are being made on both sides.

Nazarro, in a F.I.A.T. car, won the Targa Florio Cup, distance 528 kilometres (328 miles), at Bologna, averaging 74 miles an hour.

Mr. D. J. Shackleton, Labour member of the House of Commons for the Clitheroe division of Lancashire, presided over the Trade Union Congress at Nottingham. which represents a membership of 1,776,000. Mr. Shackleton said that unemployment was more than ever an urgent question. The first effective alteration must be of the hours of labour, but this could not be approached solely fr<->m the national standpoint.
