2 J “Young Turkey” Movement (From "The Dominion,” August 31, 1908.) The journal “National Zeituug” declares that the “Young Turkey” movement has increased King Edward’s anxieties. The English, says the “Zeitung,” are to realise that the efforts to hem Germany in have failed. The French support is insufficient to reduce Germany to impotence. The paper warns’ Russia against becoming England’s catspaw. This outburst of a leading official organ occasions surprise, coming after the fine speeches by Germans on the occasion of the visit of Mr. Lloyd George, Chancellor of the Exchequer, to Germany. The Union Steam Ship Company’s steamer Hawea, which has been drifting since 5.45 a.m. on July 30 with a broken tail-shaft, has been picked up by the Union Company’s steamer Rakanoa, whose first search for the Hawea proved fruitless. • • ♦ German bankers have "formed a company to lay a cable from Emden (a Prussian sea-port in Hanover province) to tile German African Colonies and to Brazil. , » • • Picture entertainments have become so popular that Messrs. Fuller and Sons have derided to abandon vaudeville performances for some months. Seen on the subject by a “Dominion” reporter on Saturday evening, Mr. Ben Fuller said that the change in the public taste came at a time when there was practically a dearth of fresh talent in’ Australasia. He went on to say that on and after Friday evening next pictures would be substituted for artists at the Theatre Royal m Wellington. Already the change had been made at his firm’s theatres at Christchurch and Dunedin, and only a brief period would elapse before the branch at Auckland fell into line.
