WOMEN’S GOLF
New Zealand Team in Australia MISS GAISFORD’S RECORD (Received August 28, 10.30 p.m.). Melbourne, August 28. The national golf championship and the women’s championship of Australia opened to-day on the Victoria golf links. Results are as follow:— Victoria defeated New South Wales by 3 matches to 1. Tasmania defeated South Australia by 5 games to nil. * Victoria defeated Tasmania by 4 matches to 1 and became again the champion State. Miss Odette Lefebvre (New South Wales) and Miss Susie Tolhurst (Victoria) opened'the carnival with one of the best mate-lies ever seen here. Miss Lefebvre went out in 34, being 2 up. Miss Tolhurst came home in even 4’s, winning on the last green, doing the eighteen holes In 73. In the handicap events Miss Gaisford (New Zealand) clipped three strokes off the. course record, held by Mrs. Ivo Whittoil, returning a gross 77 and finishing fifth. Mrs. E. Shaw (Eastern), 71 (handicap 14), won the event. .Mrs. H. G. Dodgshun (New Zealand) returned 80 and Miss J. Williams 87. The " New Zealanders, who do not compete as a team till Friday, are experiencing bad luck. Mrs. Guy Williams is suffering from influenza and Is a doubtful starter; some other players have heavy colds.
