Happenings About the Town INCIDENTS, OBSERVATIONS “There were no cases of infectious diseases in the month of May, and the health of the district is satisfactory, reported the sanitary inspector to the Makara County Council yesterday. The Public Trustee has notified the Makara County Council that the interest to be paid on sinking funds will, as from April 1, be reduced from 4 per cent, to 3A per cent.

An eight-year-old schoolboy fractured bis left leg while playing football at Wellington South School during the midday recess yesterday. The boy, Lloyd Wilson, who lives at 9 Sutherland Crescent, was taken to the hospital by the Free Ambulance.

A fracture of the left leg was received bv Mrs. M. Jacobson, of SO Donald Street. Karori, when she slipped on a path while visiting a friend in the same street early yesterday evening. Mrs. Jacobson was taken to the hospital by the Free Ambulance.

Mild excitement was caused about noon yesterday when flames began to leap from under the bonnet of a motorlorrv at the corner of Clifton and Everton Terraces. For some time the lorry appeared to be in a precarious plight, but the driver managed to suppress the flames with a sack, although persons offered assistance in the way of a dish of water and a fire extinguisher.

The Unemployment Board has drawn the attention of Makara County Council to the practice of foremen In charge of relief gangs of booking relief workers for time which they bad not worked, a condition being that the workers should receive their pay and make up the time later. The board considered that such a practice if permitted to continue would open the way to considerable abuse. The finance committee had replied to tiie board that it would do its best to carry out the wishes of the board.
