Max Baer defeated Max Schmeling by a technical kuock-out in the tenth round of a scheduled fifteen-round bout. Displaying terrific punching power, Baer caught the former world champion with a barrage of rights to the chin in the ninth round. The Teuton was tottering groggily after the beli. Coming out savagely to finish the. German in the tenth round, Baer loosed a volley of rights and floored Schmeling for the count of nine. Schmeling came up gamely, but was helpless, and Baer smashed him from one side of the ring to the other before the referee stopped the bout. Baer had 13$ pounds weight advantage. The betting was 31 to one in Schiueling’s favour. Baer had the advantage throughout. The attendance was 65.000. Max Baer, the Levermore, California, burly heavyweight, has been a., serious contender for the heavyweight boxing champ’onship of the world for some years past. Baer, who scales just over 14st., came into the limelight when he defeated Ernie Schoff. the Boston heavyweight, in a 10-round bout at Chicago on August 31, 1932. He had Schoff beaten easily, and won by a technical knock-out in the last round. The Californian is a resolute two-handed fighter, who can take punishment. His defeat of such a redoubtable opponent as Max Schmeling. the ironjawed German, puts h’m in the running for a tilt at Jack Sharkey, the heavyweight champion of the world, providing the champion can weather the forthcoming challenge from Primo Camera, the Italian giant. Schmeling won the world’s championship when he won from Jack Sharkey on a foul, and many of the best boxing authorities in the Un’ted States held that Sharkey had no right to be awarded the decision over the German when the pair met in a return battle about a year ago.
