WOMAN TRAMPER
Walk from Spirits Bay ON THE ROAD 36 DAYS Describing herself as “The Modern Grandmother,” Mrs. Kitty O’Sullivan, aged 52, arrived in Wellington on foot from Pahautanul yesterday afternoon, and thus completed a walk through the North Island in 36 days. She is an advocate for physical culture, and told a “Dominion” reporter that her weight had fallen from 12st. to Tst. 31b. in 14 months. Long-distance tramping is a new experience for her, and she says she was surprised when she found she could cover 30 miles a day with ease. Starting her walk at Spirits Bay, North Auckland, she took 18 days on the walk to Auckland, and the same time on the tramp to Wellington. Her record day was a 40-mlle walk from Patea to Wanganui. “I am on- the road every day at 0 a.m., and people have been very hospitable,” she said last evening. “After a rest in Wellington I am going to walk through the South Island.”
