CENTRAL FIRE STATION
Corporation Site Inspected Members of the Wellington Fire Board yesterday morning inspected an area of land, portion-of the corporation yard at Clyde Quay, which has been, offered at a cost of £19,000 for the purposes of a new central fire brigade station. The board has also under offer the Clyde Quay School site for £25,000. Armed with plans and accompanied by the town clerk, Mr. E. P. Norman, the board members examined the site, which comprises the north-east corner of tire yards. This section was to extend from Herd Street, the approach to the Clyde Quay Wharf, to a new road that is to bisect the yard east and west.
When the town clerk was asked as to when the “paper” road was to become an actual road, he was unable to say. As the line of that road goes through certain buildings in the corporation yard, the prospect of the continuation of Cable .Street through, to Clyde Quay seemed remote. There was no information for the members of the board about the proposed road other than more or less vague markings on a plan. There was no intention of the board members making any decision on the spot, but it i<: understood there is little doubt in the minds of members that the site offered by the City Council does not compare favourably with the school site, both as regards locality and the geological formation of the ground.
