HAWKE’S BAY SHOW

Autumn Fixture Opens

ENTRIES WELL UP

List of Special Awards

Dominion Special Service.

Hastings, March 16.

The autumn show of the Hawke’s Bay Agricultural and Pastoral Society to-day seemed to have almost everything to make it a success: glorious sunshine, a full day school holiday, and the statutory half-day for shopkeepers. There was a very large attendance. While the entries did not quite reach the record total of 2200 last year they were 2100, which in view of the times is surprisingly good. Moreover, the judges are in agreement that from the viewpoint of quality to-day’s exhibits have not been surpassed.

Mr. J. H. McNiven, president of the society, said in an interview that the farmer and oruhardist and every other primary producer was doing his utmost to maintain the prestige of the Dominion’s markets. He was much impressed by the show made by the exhibitors this year. It was something of which all should be proud. It showed that the rich fertile lands of the province were being developed to the greatest possible extent, and . the society owed a debt of gratitude to the producers for their continued .loyalty and support. In the fruit section it is evident that apples take pride of place. From all angles the displays are excellent, and there are hardly any indifferent examples. As to peaches, of which Hawke’s Bay annually dispatches enormous quantities to various parts of the Dominion, during the judging yesterday afternoon one repeatedly caught the remark so often expressed before: it is a. pity there is not a fruit cannery in the province to handle this and other fruits, because the fruit is grown with comparative ease in the surrounding districts, and throughout the season thousands of cases are sent elsewhere to be canned. In the honey section, the judge, Mr. L. Reisterer, apiary instructor, of the Department of Agriculture, Hastings, expressed the view that the section was well filled with the right kind of honey, and the judging was probably the most difficult task he had ever been called upon to perform since he had been in Hawke’s Bay. Many exhibits were so close in merit that it was difficult to differentiate between first, second and third. The following special awards were made: — 'Best Springer Spaniel: Mrs. T. V. Morrin. Best. Sporting Dog: E. D. Bery. Best Dog in Show: E. D. Bery. Best, Bitch in Show: T. W. Munro. Best. Brought-out Jersey: Herbert Wilson. Most Points for Preserves: Sirs. L. W. Goldfinch, 54 points. Most Points in Vegetables: F. Ormond, 134, first; Maurice Mason, 75, second. - Most Points for Scones, Sweets, etc.: Miss Grace Twist, 54, first; Miss May Miller, 46, second. s
