GOLDEN GUINEAS
If a kind uncle gives you a guinea, he never gives you the coin, for nowadays there is no such thing! When we speak of a guinea we just mean one-pound-and-one-shilling. But from 1663 to 18.17 golden coins called by this name were in constant use. The earliest. ones were stamped with a small, elephant beneath the head of the king, for they were made of gold from West Africa, and were intended for use in the ivory trade there.
