OUT OF THE DARK
(By Arthur W. Peach.) The tall gates of the mountain swung On silver binges of the dusk and dew, Soundless as meadows’ when the winds are still, To let a little star come through. The brown earth, seeking in the dark, Found in its hands beside a rivulet A little seed that, warmed by earth’s shy touch, Crept to the sun—a violet. Out of the night the evening star, The violet from friendly dark of earth: Out of the dusk of life, its murk and mist, Love and beauty come to birth 1
