FLIGHT TO WANGANUI
Southern Cross Welcomed
GAY SCENE AT AIR PORT Dominion Special Service Wanganui, Jan. 23. Escorted to the Wanganui air port by Pilot-Officer lan Keith, Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, in the famous monoplane Southern Cross, arrived here from Hastings at 11 a.m. and received a rousing welcome. The trip from Hastings occupied an hour and ten minutes, with the going smooth all the way. Welcomes were extended by the mayor, Mr. N. G. Armstrong, Mr. A. S. Burgess, president of the Wanganui Aero Club, and Mr. H. M. Keesing, bn behalf of the returned soldiers.
Sir Charles gave a characteristic reply and said he was pleased to renew acquaintance with Wanganui. , There was a great crowd at the air port, and the landing ground presented a colourful sight with hundreds of parked cars. After the welcome was over the Southern Cross commenced passenger flights and was kept going at high pressure all day. In the afternoon “Scotty” Fraser thrilled the crowd by parachuting from an aeroplane at a great heilght. Sir Charles will leave for Tauranga on Wednesday.
