Control of Transport
REVISED REGULATIONS Arising out of a series of conferences between the Transport Department mid transport interests throughout the Dominion, various modifications of tne regulations for the conduct of goods services which were tentatively issued last year under the Transport Act, will be announced shortly by the Government. The object of the changes to be made in the original draft is to make the regulations more flexible in their .When the regulations were circulated to local bodies toward the end of last vear, the then Acting-Minister of transport, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, invited criticism before they were issued m their final form. Numerous objections were received, and these were grouped into three classes: (1) Ob^ e ,^ 10 " 1 ® ip t p the need for any regulations, (2) objec tions to the regulations being made by Order-in-Council, and (3) objections t details of the regulations. After these objections had been considered carefully, a conference was called between various interested bod ies including the Municipal Association, the Counties Association representatives of the motor traders, an< others. It is reported that the conference was more or less agreed upon t e necessity for some regulations and the advisability of making them by Order-in-Council within the limits provided for by the Act. ’ It was stated at the conference that regulations by Order-in-Council made for greater flexibility in the working of the Act, since necessary changes could be made in them from time to time without recourse direct to Pabhflment, which might or might not be sitting when they were required. The detailed objections have been carefully re-examined by the department and by the Government, and in the light of these the regulations will be'modified in such a way as to make them more flexible than the transport industry in the first place feared they would be.
