Farmer Government

Sir, —I desire to congratulate the Hon. W. Downie Stewart upon the courageous stand he has taken against, an increase in exchange. He has certainly done all that was possible to prevent this disastrous step, aud it now behoves the people of New Zealand to take definite action to prevent this legislation going on to the Statute Book. One wonders how long the people of New Zealand are going to put up. with government by the farmers. Cabinet is dominated by farmers, and the lifting of the exchange rate to 25 per cent, is for the sole benefit (temporary) of the farming community, but at the cost of the rest of the people. The cost of living must increase by nearly 20 per cent. How can salaried men and wage-earners stand such an increase? The time has surely arrived when the people should petition the Governor-General to dissolve Parliament on the grounds that the present coalition has not got the confidence of the majority of the electors.

Are Jhe people prepared to face an increase of 20 per cent, in the cost of living and at the same time carry a much greater burden of taxation to cover the increased cost of interest on our external debt? Our politicians are playing with fire, surely.—l am. etc., DISGUSTED ELECTOR. Hawke’s Bay. January 20.
