FIGHT WITH FLAMES
Outbreak on Taronga Loudon, Jan. 16. Mi 1 . Harry Barnes, husband of the actress, Miss May Cobb, who was travelling by the Norwegian motorship Taronga, cabled the “Daily Express” that the vessel took fire at 7.30 on Saturday evening, and turned back to Berlin when four hours away. “We stood by with suitcases packed, hoping not to have to leave the ship,” he stated. “Then we saw a hold explode under the third officer and third engineer, who had miraculous escapes. Slightly burned, they continued fighting the fire. The crew struggled all night long amid suffocating smoke. The fire spread to the other holds, including casks of tallow. We managed to make harbour with a list of 3<) degrees." The cargo included 15,000 bales of wool, 1900 tons of flour, 3600 tons of wheat, and 1500 tons of copra.
