THE RACING WORLD

ROYAL ARTIST’S CUP SURPRISE

Handsome Win in Big Trentham Event

GUARANTEE TAKES THE STAKES

. Open Sprint Won Solidly by Autopay

KEEN RACING ENJOYED UNDER IDEAL CONDITIONS

£By “The Watcher.”)

‘ - The'opening day of.the Wellington Racing Clubs summer meeting at Trentham yesterday was featured by very keen and interesting racing, the majority of the finishes being extremely close. Conditions were-very favourable, in fact ideal, the weather being warm and bright: A'fresh northerly wind, with which the day opened, died away, the last portion of the programme being conducted in brilliant weather. , . The'track .was in perfect order with a splendid sole of green grass and the sting being out of the ground horses were able to hit out freely. ■ There-seemed to be a difference of opinion regarding the wisdom of not cutting the grass, some trainers laying the blame'for the failure'of'their charges on the fact that it was slippery, but all .horses were racing under the same conditions, and ; while it. may have been the ’cause of some failures it provided the -best.going that has been seen at Trentham for a summer meeting ' for several'years. • The Wellington" Cup. was a particularly keen contest and provided a very exciting finish. The winner, Royal Artist, was not well fancied and his win saw a big dividend hoisted on the “straight-out” machine. He has done a good deal of racing and travelling, and competed here unsuccessfully in the spring. He won the Mitchelson Cup at Ellerslie in November, but on the whole his form did not justify the Wellington public viewing his chance as more than an outside one, and Auckland also supplied the runner-up, Antique, whose performance under his big weight was very creditable It was almost a repetition of last year’s Wellington Cup, when the placed horses were confined to Riccarton stables. " .

The locally-owned and trained Autopay proved himself again as one of the best, if not the best, sprinter in the Dominion, by winning the Telegraph Handicap decisively. He carried top weight, and at the finish gave none of his opponents a chance. It was unfortunate that three horses. Golden Wings. The Tiger, and Grecian Prince, should have been left to take no part in the running, but it did not detract from the merit of Autopay’s performance. - An early sensation was provided by the defeat of the hot favourite, Diatomous, in the Wellington Stakes. It did not. however, detract from the brilliant performance of the Paper Money colt, Guarantee, who won in solid style. Guarantee was beaten- at Auckland, but his season’s form entitles'him to rank as one of the leading two-year-olds of the season.

The system offiwin-and-plaee wagering was in vogue for*the first time at'Trentham, and ' Under the circumstances proved very satisfactory. The figures tire fully referred to in another column, but the total for'the day. £21,811, represents a decrease of £4672/10/- on lest year’s first day. The sum of £7336 went through the straight-out machine, and £14.475 was handled on the place-total-isator. . < ■ Beau Gallante Easily. Beau Gallante, whose form rightly entitled him to favouritism in the High?, weight, was installed a red hot favourite. That the backing was justified he clearly showed. 'He was not one of the first to begin, but he soon ran up to Clangor, who had’scampered away in the lead, and) at the five furlongs post they were .five or six lengths out in front of the bunch, which was headed by Palace, Monastic, Chief Line, Nightguard, Jay? son, Saltpot, and Blacksmith. Clangor and Beau Gallante were still in charge, after they straightened up, but Clangor was soon under the whip, and Monastic, who had run up in the middle stages into third,, place with Palace, was threatening. Beau Gallante, however, although he ran out wide, had no difficulty in disposing ( of his opponents.- Monastic’s efforts left

him beaten at the finish, and Cape Fair got up on the rails to snatch second from him narrowly. The bunch was well up, headed by Chief Line, Saltpot, Golden Horn and Blacksmith.

It was the best of good things for the winner. Monastic was a trifle unlucky, as he did not get away well, otherwise he probably would have been second. Nightguard, who was well backed, was last away and lost his chance. Chief Line was well backed, and finished fourth. Actually Beau Gallante never was in danger. A Solid Colt. The Wellington Stakes saw the sensational downfall of the hot favourite Diatomous. He was very much on his toes at the barrier,- being disinclined to turn into his place, but he appeared to get: away well, reaching the rails early in the ■running. However, Good Hunting and La?k had ..both, headed him,out of .the ‘ tapes, and as. they ran for the straight he had. to pull outside this pair. Others prominent were Midinette, Fracas and Princess Doreen. Diatomous had run. through to the front at the- false rail from Midinette, with , Princess -Doreen falling . back,- . and Guarantee ’ 'moving, up. ■ Diatomous- stopped very; quickly i over the last furlong,' - anil: Midinette was dear, but '/Guarantee finished with a brilliant run to win narrowly; going away. Lack was a moderate third, with Inflation fourth, and then came Diatomous, Good Hunting. Princess Doreen, and Fracas, with Importance last. ... Guarantee won in brilliant style with a very solid run. Midinette showed her usual speed, buj;. was Stopping at the... finish'.” Lack ran a good race, and so did Inflation, -whose first start'it was since his return from Sydney with nn injury early in the spring. The two-year-olds, outside the winner, were disappointing, and Diatomous finished badly. There did not appear any excuse for his poor showing. ' i . Broken Rule Surprises.

Broken Rule’s win in the Apprentices’ Plate was a big surprise,’but thoroughly deserved. ’ Broken Rule and Posy showed

out first, but when they had settled down Purse had run to the front and made the ■pace from Broken Rule, Posy, Niggerhead, Azalea, Farmer, and Glenvane. As they ran for the straight, Purse had been joined by Glenvane, and they headed for home first from Broken Rule on the rails, Niggerhead, Beaconsfield, and Aiguille. There was a strenuous race home, eight or nine horses being in the picture. Broken Rule finished best on the rails to snatch victory by half a head from Niggerhead and Farmer, who came well from the middle of the field. Aiguille was right up fourth, with Azalea in line, then Eminent, Purse, Beaconsfield, Chock Say. Ben Hur, and Glenvane. Glenvane was unlucky, as he began poorly and had to make up a lot of ground. He was well in the picture till the last furlong. Farmer _ and Azalea were not too well served. Chock Say never got into the picture. Win for Favourite. The two-year-old handicap race produced a very good contest and a elose finish, but the winner, Porotiti, who was a warm favourite, was always going well with victory in his grasp. Lady Nan showed out first, with Porotiti and Sweet Agnes, and as they ran out on to the course proper Sweet Agnes had dropped back, and the order was Lady Nan. Porotiti, and Catalogue in front of ‘Pegged Exchange and Bon Rapide. Porotiti came on well to win by a neck, but comfortably, from Pegged Exchange, who just headed Lady Nan. Sweet Agnes finished on again a very close fourth, and then came Bon Rapide, Catalogue, Safari, and Hint. Porotiti ran a bit greenly, but is improving all the time. Sweet Agnes looked unlucky. Royal Artist’s Cup. The Cup was a fine contest, the honours of which rested with the top-weight, Antique, who was forced over extra ground to make his run, while the winner, Royal Artist, got a fortunate, and clear run on the rails There was. some delay at the start, as was only natural with a big field, but it was aggravated by Juniper breaking through the barrier and going a furlong before being pulled up to return. They got away to a good start, Great Star showing out early with Princess Argosy from Fiji, Refresher, Gold Trail. These horsese were followed out of the straight by Red Heckle and Jaloux at the head of the bunch, with Concentrate well back, and the rear brought up by Red Sun and Retract. Down the back stretch the order was not miiclu altered, but approaching the turn Red Heckle improved his position and Royal Artist was moving forward. From the five and On to the turn Princess Argosy and Refresher were still making the pace from Fiji, Great Star, Red Heckle, Jaloux. Tout le Mond went up quickly at the half-mile and was handy to the leaders at the entrance to the straight', where Royal Artist began to thread his way forward on the rails, while Antique put in an appearance on the outer. The leaders, stopped, quickly soon after leaving the false- rail, and Fiji hit the front, being strenuouslychallenged by Antique, Jaloux hanging on. Antique had the race won 50 yards off' the post, but’ Royal Artist, continuing his run on the outer, got up to beat him narrowly, while he only-just nosed Fiji out of second money. Jaloux was fourth, and then came Refresher, Great Star, Retract, Rocket, Tout le'Mbnd,-and Greenhorn.. . The honours of the race were, with Antique;' who carried his big weight like a champion.. The big field, caused him to cover sonie extfa ground, which was unavoidable, and this cost him the race. It was a -very clean, run event, ’ and everything had a chance. Royal Artist’s win was a surprise, but he won well. Fiji ran a great race, and rewarded his supporters with a good dividend. All the well-backed runners had every ehnnee. An Impressive Win. '"'Riilmg Lighfj confidently backed and confidently ridden, was always in or near the field in the Anniversary Handicap, and scored narrowly but very cleverly ..and well. La Poupee caught the barrier at the start, and was well back. Gold Pit showed out first with Wise Choice, Tippling, Rational -IL- Drum Fire soon ran to. the front with Ruling Light, and they ran down the back and. out of the straight from Martian Chief, Tahoma, Gold Pit, Awaken, La Poupee, Rational 11, Rich- 1 fielfl. The two leaders were still in charge

entering the straight from Martian Chief, Awaken, Tahoma, La Poupee, Richfield. Drum Fire and Tahoma challenged hotly, but Ruling Light, kept going, won nicely. Tahoma just headed off Drum r ire. Shatter came well to fourth place, ami then came Martian Chief, Wise Choice, Richfield, and Rational 11. Ruling Light’s win was impressive. Shatter ran an excellent race. He got into some trouble and lost his place early, being right back in-the rear at the five' furlongs. He finished with a very solid run. Martian Chief was another fresh horse to run a good race. .. , An inquiry was opened into Barry s handling of Tippling, and was adjourned until Saturday. ;,' ■ ' ' 'Autopay’s Solid Win. .Autopay. won the open sprint in; his usual ch'aractertis'tic style, cutting down, the leaders to win handsomely. Souchong, from the inner, began best, and ran to the course proper attended by T’ornp, with The Quorn, Cricket Bat, and Autopay handy. Souchong was' Still in front entering the straight, with Autopay handy, and in i behind her .were The Quorn and Cricket Bat. Lordly Knight was fourth, and then came Qrapai, , Miladi, La Moderne, and The Quorn. Grecian Prince, The Tiger and Golden ■ Wings got left, and took no part in the running.. Nothing had any chanee with Autopay. who has never been in better form. The misfortune .to Golden Wings, Grecian Prince and The Tiger was very bad luck. Souchong was consistent, but most of the others were disappointing. A Good Hack. The start of the lust race was delayed in the first place by Shelter bolting the. course, ’the field waiting for him to return. It was at least a quarter of an hour after the close of the totalisator before the race was dispatched. Chief . Light and Zeebriigge were always in front, and they still held command halfway up the, straight, where Hula Belle came through, and heads only separated this trio. Wasteland, whq was -with the leaders on' the inner to the false rail,, weakened oyer the last bit/and'Nebulae headed tlie bunch for fourth, followed by Slippery, Navaho," Solitaire II and Grand Review. • ■■. ■ , Hula Belle’s’performance 'was impressive. and she looks an extra good hack,’ Details of :the Racing The nuiherals In ' frbrit of the" plaeings indicate the order of favouritism, , those given first being for the win totalisator. NAPIER PARK RACES Win-and-Place System By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier. Jan. 19. The Napier Park Racing Club, which will hold a meeting on January as a portion of the reopening of the Napier celebrations, has decided to adopt the wiu-and-place system of investments on the totalisator. The committee received over a hundred nominations, which augurs well for a successful meeting. ASHHURST RACES Opening of New Grandstand The Anniversary Day meeting of the Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club will be marked by the opening of the new grandstand. With a win and place totalisator, this fixture should enhance its popularity with followers of racing. The low charge for admission is an additional attraction that should ensure a large attendance of the general public. A Good Advertisement. Paper Money received a fine advertisement at Trentham yesterday in the wins of his two sons, Guarantee and Autopay. Guarantee, who now ranks as one of the leading youngsters of the season, put up a very solid performance in the Wellington Stakes, coming at the right end to win going away. Ilis dam, Elitre Nous, is at the Elderslie Stud, and became the property of Mr. J, M. Samson on the allocation of mares when the stud was formed into a company. She is by Boniform from Secret Link, and belongs to the same family as Silver Link. Silvermine, and Chief Link, Pegged Exchange, runner-up in the Nursery Handicap, is j also by Paper Money. Autopay, who must rank as one of the best horses ever sired by Paper Money, has now won four | races on end.
