NOT A WOMAN-HATER
TJONALD COLMAN denies that he is a woman-hater. He likes women and women like him. Somewhere in the mysterious labyrinths of rumour and gossip and publicity there was germinated the report that the star is shy.
The failure of his own marriage has not made him cynical toward all marriage. He believes most decidedly that marriage is an ideal state. But because he is discreet, rumour runs rampant that Mr. Colman avoids women. The gossips will cackle and the busybodies will bore away, but Colman stands reticent. retiring and unwilling to be drawn into a discussion of those things which he rightfully believes belong purely and simply to him. Mindful of his position in the public eye, be has gone his way quietly and unobtrusively, bringing to a screen star something of the mystery and fascination that obtained in the day of the bygone legitimate stage.
Just after the war he marired .Miss Thelma Raye, of the British stage. They had been appearing together in a melodrama. The union was not a successful one. Because of British divorce laws and because of geographical differences (Miss Raye in England and Colman in Hollywood), severance of the tie was not easy. Only a legal separation could be effected. And so it stands.
On the screen. Colman continues to be a romantic lover, robust adventurer, and polished cosmopolite. Off the screen, he remains a irnular bachelor, charming, sincere, and circumspect.
