CENTRAL HEATING
SCIENCE and modern engineering have resulted in many’ marvellous aehieverneufs that are now an important part of the present-day conditions, and which to-day become so taken for granted that few of us pause to pay tribute to the labours anil skill of those who have made it possible-for ns to enjoy the many conveniences and luxuries with which we are surrounded. Not the least of these achievements that detract from die discomforts our forebears had to contend with, has bene the gradual development of steam, coal, petroleum and, last of all, crude oil.for heating purposes. 'The very latest in modern heating machinery, and yet the cheapest to install and to maintain, has been fitted in the Hotel Central to cater for the comfort and convenience of the hotel's guests. The units that supply heat for the hot water and radiators are two of the latest type Bay Oil Burners that consume crude oil. these being similar to those installed in many other hotels and institutions in Hawke's Bay. METHOD OF OPERATION. Supplied and fitted by Messrs. Peterkin and Moore, of Marston's Buildings, Napier, who hold the Hawke's Bay Agency, the Ray Oil Burners are thoroughly automatic in principle, except that the burner supplying the heating units to the radiators that control the room temperature may be disconnected during such times as the rooms are heated sufficiently naturally. When required, the heat supplied to the radiators maintains a summer room temperature during the coldest of winters. The other burner maintains the tap water at boiling, or at any required point up to ISO degrees F„ and provides boiling water instantaneously in any part of the hotel at all hours of the day or night, thereby obviating the often annoying delay frequently found in other systems that lack 'the Ray Oil Burner's efficiency. Once the burner is set to operate at any given degree 'of heat, the operation is purely automatic, and the required’heat is maintained without 'any attention. LOW CAPITAL AND MAINTENANCE COSTS. While highly efficient and undoubtedly superior to other types of heating apparatus, the Ray Oil Burner is not an expensive heating unit to install, and furthermore, maintenance costs are considerably lower than all other heating systems. Engineers have calculated that the Ray Oil Burner may be maintained at a figure less than half that required to do the same duty by coal heating, while the additional advantages of having a more efficient and automatic system has created an excellent demand for the Ray Oil Burner in the rehabilitation of Hawke’s Bay. In one instance where the owner of a building changed his system and installed a Ray Oil Burner, it was proved conclusively that the capital cost of the new type of burner was saved within six months by the decrease in maintenance costs, the maintenance charges, in this particular case, being only .one-third of what they were prior to the alteration. An idea of the savings effected maybe judged from the fact that one gallon of crude oil. at a cost of 6d., develops ISO.oOO ‘B.T.U.'s (British Terminal Units), as compared with 12,000 (gross) B.T.U.’s obtained from one pound of the best Taupiri coal used in a coal burner, at a cost of id per lb. The agents will be pleased to supply anyone interested with all particulars upon application.
