Death After Long Illness
STATESMAN AND SCHOLAR (Received Dec. 11, 6.30 p.m.) Sydney, Dec. 11. The death has occurred after a long illness of Sir Joseph Carruthers, M.L.C., statesman and scholar, a former Premier of New South Wales, and an ardent Federalist, aged 75. Bon at Kiama, New South Wales, in 1857, Sir Joseph Carruthers was educated at Sydney University, where he gained his M.A. degree, and was admitted as a solicitor in 1879. During his political career ho held high Cabinet rank, being also a member of the Federal Convention which sat from 1907 to 190 S, and framed the Commonwealth Constitution.
