MUST NOT SLIP BACK

New Zealand Herd-testing MINISTER AT STRATFORD Dominion Special Service. Stratford, Nov. 17. The Hon. R. Masters, officially opening the Stratford Show to-day, congratulated the association on the fact that this is the first show in Stratford’s history opened free of debt, but he issued a word of warning to the association to conserve its resources in view of what may lie ahead. The Minister referred to the importance of herd-testing, which he said was one of the greatest factors in increasing production, and regretted that this was not being as much in force in Taranaki as was possible; in fact, it was going back in this province. The Dairy Board, Mr. Masters said, had ceased to give a grant of £6OOO toward herd-testing, but the Government grant of £7500 was still available. It might be that the Government would have to withdraw that grant, but the Minister appealed to farmers not to loosen up on herdtesting in any circumstances.
