Business at Monthly Meeting STREET IMPROVEMENTS The monthly meeting of the Wellington City Council was held last evening. There were present the Mayor (Mr T. C. A. Hislop), Councillors W. H. Bennett, W. J. Gaudin, \W. J. McEldowney,‘ J.- Burns, J. N. Wallace, W. Duncan, S. Holin, W. Appleton, J. McDonald, F. Meadowcroft, C. H. 'Chapman, R. McKeen, and R. Semple. Surface sealing of Jessie Street is to bo considered when the council'is’ framing next year’s estimates. Cr. J. McEldowney wished to introduce the names of several streets in . Thorndon, but objection, was taken to introducing a list ofstreets without the consideration of the works committee. Cr. W. H. Bennettsaid that Jessie Street was on the list for surfacing this year. • • * No action is to be taken with regard to the request of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals that the tramways, by-laws be amended to permit the carriage of animals in baskets cr crates on trams. *. • • The work of re-surfacing that portion of Tinakdri Road between Park Street and the Hutt Road, estimated to cost £350, is to be nut in hand as soon as funds are available. e « • Improvements are to be effected to Palliser Road as a relief work. . Authority was granted for the completion of the access path from Kelburn Parade to Wellington Terrace as a relief work at an estimated co>t to the council of £5O. The work will not commenced until funds are available. An assurance that when the Waterworks Loan Bill came before the Legislative Council steps would be taken to insert a clause providing that before any, of the money was expended a poll of the ratepayers should be taken was given ,by the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop. ♦ * * Cr. W. Appleton raised the question of . providing better accommodation for the public at the rates office. Many people, he said, were now paying their rates in instalments, and did not like to reveal their financial position over the counter. It was not fair to the officers either to hare to transact business of that nature under the existing conditions. The formation of Tawa Street as far as the western boundary of the city is to be undertaken as a relief work. > . Subject to compliance with the city en-' gmeer’s requirements, the council approved the construction of a road through private property connecting Brooklyn with Highbury. This is proposed to be carried out as a relief work at no cost to the council. An application to erect a newspaper stand on the Courtenay Place reserve has been refused by the City Council. ‘ ♦ » * Cr.T. Forsyth drew attention to the 1 ist of buildings of a temporary character for which a six months extension, was being asked. He wanted to know .whore they were getting to in respect to buildings which did not comply with the by-laws. Cr. H. A. Huggins «aid that they were all commercial buildings adequately serving the purposes for which they were, built, and this was scarcely a time for the council to refuse such extensions. The clause was passed. * » « The Libraries Committee reported that a deputation had been received from the Vogeltown and Mornington-Public Hall Society requesting that a branch library be established at the Vogeltown Public Hall. The committee recommended that consideration be given to the question of supplying new. books, for the proposed library in connection ‘with the framing of next year’s estimates, and that in the meantime the chief librarian be instructed to assist the society by supplying any ‘ literature which was available. This was agreed to. * * * The council granted the use of the Basin Reserve to the Wellington Centre of the N.Z.A.A.A. for sports meetings during the summer, subject to the council receiving 15 per cent, of the gross gate takings, and 50 per ceht. of the grandstand receipts.

The Fire Board is to be asked by the City Council to authorise an officer of the fire brigade to swear informations prepared by the city solicitor in connection with over-crowding at the Grand Opera House on August 24.

No action is to be taken by the council in connection with a recommendation received from the Canterbury Progress League that the highways fund be maintained and all special motor taxation be paid into the fund.
