TRAFFIC IN TUNNEL
Speed Maximum Ignored MOUNT VICTORIA BY-LAWS If laws are made to be broken, those governing traffic in the Mount Victoria tunnel are no exception. The by-law provides that the speed limit shall be 20 miles per hour, and there shall be at least 50 feet between vehicles. Both regulations are flagrantly broken every hour of the day. For two or three days past observation has been kept on the traffic through the tunnel, and it is estimated that lorries travel the tunnel at about 25 miles an hour, and motor-cars between 30 and 35 miles an hour. As for the -dividing space between cars, the regulations do not appear to be known, as in many instances cars followed one another out of the tunnel ten, twelve, and fifteen feet apart only —that is dozens of instances. The central steel studs in the tunnel are a good guide to motorists as they keep bright under the wear of traffic, and can always be seen, even when an approaching car’s lights are full on—another breach of the by-laws.
