ROAD TRANSPORT

Goods-Service Control NEW BODY FORMED An organisation for the protection of commercial road transport has been formed, and the first general meeting of the new body, the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance (Inc.), was held in Wellington this week. Fifty members from all parts of the Dominion attended, (and Mr. S. A. Goldingham, of Palmerston North, presided. The Commissioner of Transport, Mr. J. S. Hunter, attended the meeting by invitation, and he congratulated the organisers on establishing a national body which would be of benefit in placing the views of commercial motor owners before the Government. He said his department was aware of the helpfulness of other organisations, and he announced that the department would circulate proposals for the control of goods services as soon as possible. Mr. Hunter answered a number of questions, and the meeting approved a system of control for goods services by licensing. Mr. 11. J. Knight, of Wellington, whs appointed secretary and organiser, and the following council was elected: — Messrs. T. W. Hercock (Napier), J. B. Cullen (Ashburton), A. S. Baily (Auckland), E. W. Harris (Kaikoura), S. A. Goldingham (Palmerston North), F. A. Hooker (New Plymouth), and J. Fabling (Wellington). The council waited on the ActingMinister of Transport, Hon. E. A. Ransom, who assured the deputation that consideration would be given to the views of the alliance before any action was taken to apply the provisions of the Transport Licensing Act to goods services. The Minister expressed appreciation that an organisation had been formed to express the opinions of long-distance goods services, and he promised that every facility would be extended by the Transport Department for dealing with the problems of the transport industry.
