RATES OF INTEREST

Attitude of Government NO MORE INTERFERENCE • Assurance was given last evening by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, that the Government had no intention of interfering further with rates of interest. Mr. Forbes remarked on reports to the effect that the investing public in some parts of New Zealand was reluctant to take up localbody debenture issues through fear of further State Interference with interest rates.

“The Government is opposed to high rates of interest, and we are naturally interested in seeing that rates are left as low as possible and within the capacity of those who have to carry many other burdens,” said Mr. Forbes. He added, however, that at the present time there was no proposal to make a further statutory reduction in interest rates.
