KIWI’S NEST FOUND
Eggs for the Museum The discovery of a kiwi’s nest, containing two eggs, has been made at Kawau Island. A party out hunting wallabies in the vicinity of Kawau Point were surprised when their dog put up a kiwi, and secured it by the leg. After the bird was released, uninjured, its nest was found in some fern partially exposed. This is unusual, as it is the habit of the kiwi to make its nest in dense undergrowth or under fallen trees, and consequently its nest is seldom seen. On behalf of the Zoological Society, Mr. Lediard, its official photographer, went to tlie island and secured pictures of the nest. A point about the eggs is their abnormal size in comparison with the kiwi. One weighed lloz. and the other 12i0z., the measurements of the latter being 4|in. by 3in. The eggs, which were addled, were taken back to the Auckland Museum. Evidence that kiwis are plentiful on the island is seen in the fact that a wallaby trapper in a couple of seasons has released about 150 from his traps.
