SERIES OF CHARGES
Alleged Breaking and Entering BANK INTRUDER ACCUSED Dominion Special Service. Wanganui. September 6. Charged in the Wanganui Magistrate's Court this morning with breaking and entering by night the shop of E. Goldsbury, a chemist, Alfred Jeffery was remanded to September 12. He is alleged to have stolen £3/14/- from the till, a bottle of chloroform, and cotton wool. Accused was further charged with having broken into the premises of the Federal and Imperial hotels at Wanganui, and stealing a considerable sum of money from both. Early on Sunday morning, July 3, the safe and office of the Federal Hotel, Wanganui, was rifled, approximately £l5O in notes and silver being taken. Keys had been stolen from the bedroom of the proprietress, Mrs. Mary Bethune. It is thought the t.bief must have hidden under Mrs. Bethune’s bed until she was asleep. The safe at the Imperial Hotel at Wanganui was robbed during the early hours of Wednesday, August 3. The silver, amounting to some £BO or £9O, and a diamond ring, was left, but notes and two cheques taken. In this case, Investigations showed that the burglar had occupied the room next to the proprietor, Mr. T. Hurley. He had apparently waited till Mr. Hurley was asleep, and then stolen the keys from his pocket. Jeffery was arrested at the revolver point in the Patea branch of the of New Zealand at 10.45 on Saturday night, and was charged at the Patea Court on Monday morning with breaking and entering, with intent to commit theft. Accused was remanded till September 14.
