Mrs. R. C. Holmes The death occurred suddenly at the Lister Private Hospital, Abel Smith Street, yesterday of Mrs. Rachel Caroline Holmes, relict of the late chief pilot, Lancelot Holmes. The late Mrs. Holmes was widely known for her charitable and kindly disposition. The late chief pilot Holmes, who was for many years in Wellington, died in the early ’nineties. In those days the pilot station was the only dwelling at Worsen Bay. One son survives, Mr. J. L. Holmes, of Wadestown. Mr. J. D. P. Hampton The death occurred at Wellington on Sunday of Mr. John Douglas Pearce Hampton, a well-known inmate of the Home for Aged Needy, at the age of 84 years. The late Mr. Hampton, who’ was an old Maori War veteran, was well known in New Zealand, particularly in the South Island, and his cheerful and kindly disposition made him a popular and much-loved figure. He came out to New Zealand some time in the 'sixties with a British regiment sent to quell the rebellious Maori tribes, and in those early colonial days he saw a good deal of fighting in the Waikato, Taranaki, and Wanganui. With the coming of more peaceful times Mr. Hampton settled for a while in Wellington, being employed in the building trade. He later went to Dunedin, and after a few years spent there, obtained a position as assistant janitor at Christ’s College, Christchurch. While there he was very popular with the boys. He entered the home about 14 years ago, and during bis stay there enjoyed fairly good health. He was keenly interested in the works of the Good Templars’ Society.
