COLLEGE BOXING
Wellesley Tournament BOYS FIT AND SKILFUL That Wellesley College sees to it that its pupils are physically fit was evident from the form displayed at the annual boxing tournament at the Winter Show Stadium yesterday afternoon, when the elimination bouts were decided. Though about,7o lads entered the ring, every bout: went the full distance. The boys showed that they possessed gameness,. stamina, and quite a good knowledge of footwork. There was not a single knock-out during the afternoon. Some promising form 'was shown, particularly in the lighter divisions. M. Miles gave a bright display in the 85-951 b. class, proving himself a clever two-banded boxer, who hit straight, and ■with the weight' of his body behind liis blows. Stout, in the 65-751 b. class, was another competitor, who moved fast, and had power behind his punches. He loves the game for the game’s sake, and wore a happy smile throughout the entire bout. Steyens, who won the medal for the most scientific boxer, at the last tournament, struck a Tartar in Bradley in the 85-951 b. class. Though Stevens showed nimble footwork, Bradley kept, leading relentlessly, and outpointed his opponent handsomely. H. Turnbull had the advantage in weight, height, and reach over C. Meachem in the 150-lSOlb. class, and scored well with a good straight left, which he shot out with pace and steam. Meachem fought a game battle, and employed an effective smother to weather the stormy periods. The final between Turnbull and McLachlan to-day should be worth seeing. Mr. D. H. Hopkirk, physical instructor to the college, placed the competitors in the ring in the pink of physical condition, and a tribute to the w-ork which had been done by Mr. P. Charles, visiting boxing instructor, was paid by the principal of Wellesley College. Mr. H. Amos, who introduced Mr. Charles to the fair attendance of parents, who followed the bouts with lively interest. Mr. T. Tracy acted as referee. Mr. Amos as announcer, and Mr. J. R. Lamason as timekeeper. The semi-finals and finals will be boxed this afternoon, commencing at 1.30 p.m. The following are the results:— 50-601b.—Middleton beat C. Treadwell, A.
