Vegetable Plan Handicap CRITICISM OF PROPOSAL There are some relief workers employed under No. 5 scheme who, although not objecting to doing their bit on the vegetable-growing plan, hold some critical opinions on the subject “Take my case,” said one worker. “I get two and a half days’ work every week. That means three and a half days off. At present lam able now and again to pick up an odd job at my trade on those days. If I have to go off gardening on those off days I lose the chance of those odd jobs, and I and my family are so much the worse off. “I think that if a man can show that he can get a job now and then when not on pick-and-shovel work he should be allowed to take it on In preference to going out with a gang planting spuds. Why, If the bureau puts 4000 men growing vegetables they should be able to raise enough to supply the whole of the North Island. Imagine the stuff , that 4000 Chinese could grow if they put their minds to it!”
