OBITUARY

Mr. J. M. Sunley The death occurred at Kelburn yesterday in his sixty-second year of Mr. John Maxwell Sunley, a member of an old pioneer family whose descendants live in Wellington. Mr. Sunley was born in Nelsonjind assisted his father, who was in charge of the Hampden Street School. Later he went into business on the West Coast. From the time of his retirement from business ten years ago Mr. Sunley took considerable interest in public affairs. In recent years he came to Wellington, where most of his family live, and his death yesterday brought to an end an illness which had lasted for some time. He is survived by four sons and two daughters—Messrs. R. Sunley, M. M Sunley and R. M. Sunley, of Wellington; Mr. L. Sunley, of Porirua; Miss Sunley, of Wellington, and Mrs. Gossett, of Karori. Mr. Edward Murphy The death has occurred in the Pahiatua Hospital at the age of 88 years of a well-known Makuri identity, Mr. Edward Murphy, says a “Dominion Special Service message. Mr. Murphy was the first warder at Point Halswell Prison (Wellington). This was at a time when there was only one warder at the prison, who was in sole charge, and carried out all duties. The late Mr. Murphy retired from the service 23 years ago, and took up his residence at the Makuri Hotel. Here, “Old Ned,” as he was known, became a well-known and popular figure. Mr. Murphy, who was born in Ireland, had no relatives in New Zealand. , Mrs. Mary Blatchford The death occurred at Masterton last night of Mrs. Mary Blatchford, widow of the late John Blatchford, who died at Masterton last Tuesday. Mr.' Blatchford was one of the best-known farmers and stud-breeders in the Wairarapa. Both he and Mrs. Blatchford, who was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. C. Morgan, of Upper Hutt, were early settlers of the district. Mr. Blatchford took up land at Rangitumau in 1867, and was joined by Mrs. Blatchford on their marriage in 1874. Deceased are survived by a family of three sons and three daughters.
