HUTT VALLEY NEWS

Work on the new Petone Swimming Baths has proceeded rapidly, and tht site has now been excavated to the required depth. Large mounds oj earth surround the excavation, and it is expected that the concreting will be commenced shortly. Hopes are expressed that the baths will be available for swimming in the summer. Acting in conjunction with the Post and Telegraph Department, the Petone Borough Council has reinforced the new underground telephone cable to guard against the heavy traffic. This will have the effect of allowing the existing telegraph poles to be removed for the widening of the street, Reference to’ the passing of Mr. John Priestley, a valued and muchloved worker for the Sudan United Mission, was made at the, last meeting of the Lower Hutt Methodist Women’s Missionary Auxiliary. Letters of sympathy were sent to Mrs. Priestley and to his daughter, Mrs. J. S. Reid. Sympathy was also expressed tb Mrs. Carman, who has just lost her son. LODGE BUSINESS Meeting Held at Petone Brother O. ; Oliff, N.Q., presided over a large attendance of members and visitors at the fortnightly meeting of the Heretaunga Lodge, No. 115, 1.0.0. F., At Petone. A hearty vote of welcome, carried by acclamation, was accorded the visitors, among whom were Brother C. P. Gandy, P.G., D.D.G.My end Brother M. Brady, N.G., Bellvue Lodge. Several invitations to socials and dances were accepted. Routine business being concluded, Heretaunga Lodge played O-Kiwi-iti for the “five hundred” shield. The result was 7 games to 5 in favour of Here--1 taunga. Supper brought the evening to a close, ADDRESS ON JAVA Women’s Missionary Auxiliary Mrs. A. M. Lewis, of Wellington, was the speaker for the afternoon at the August meeting. of the Lower Hutt Methodist Women’s Missionary Auxiliary. There was a good attendance Of members, and the address was listened to with great interest. Mrs. Lewis had much to tell of her trip to Java. She gave vivid descriptions of the native peoples, the beautiful hotels, the extensive rice fields, the botanical gardens, the mountain places, forests and volcanoes; and she also recounted a number of experiences she had while there. She was presented with flowers by the president. _ Various matters of business were dealt with before afternoon tea was served, and the meeting closed with the Benediction. TO ASSIST THEMSELVES' Stokes Valley Unemployed In an endeavour to assist themselves, and at the same time encourage the practical assistance of other local organisations, the Stokes Valley relief workers have formed themselves into hn association. A general committee of representatives from other organisations, including the relief workers’ association, has been formed as a means to further the activities. GIRLS’ CLUB ENTERTAINS A jolly evening was held recently in Knox Schoolroom, when the Girls’ Club entertained the Ladies’ Guild. There were about 50 present, And Mrs. J. Wilson, as leader of the club, received the guests. Games and competitions were entered into with zest. - The musical items were as follow:-— Song, Miss Jean Orr, and vocal duets were contributed by Miss F. Horlor and Miss F. Davies, and Miss F. Horior and Miss E. Pryde. Supper was provided by the girls, and Mrs. Whitchcr, on behalf of the guild, thanked the girts for thehappy evening, which concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
