UNEMPLOYED TOTALS
Increase in Last Week FEWER MEN UNPLACED An increase of 514 in the number of registered unemployed throughout New Zealand is recorded in the figures for the week ended August 8, according to a return supplied by the Acting-Min-ister of Employment, Hon. A. Hamilton, yesterday. The total number on the books of labour bureaux was 56,351, as compared with 55,837 a week earlier. Of this total, 47,841 were on rationed work under the No. 5 unemployment relief Scheme, and 720 were otherwise placed, leaving 8510 unplaced or standing down, compared with 10,322 for the previous week. This represented an actual decrease in men unplaced of 1812. Although there has been fluctuations, the number of unplaced men has fallen almost consistently during recent weeks. The total unplaced last week declined by 7116, as compared with the week ended July 18, and by 4662 as against the week ended June 27. The following table indicates the registrations during
