“TIDE HAS TURNED”

Conditions in England TARANAKI MAN’S VIEWS Dominion Special Service. Stratford, August 11. Mr. John Petrie, one of Taranaki's best-known business men. accompanied by Mrs. Petrie, lias just returned from a visit to the United Kingdom, which occupied some 18 months. They were accorded a “Welcome Home” at the Parish Hall, there being a very large and representative attendance. In an interview with a “Dominion” representative, Mr. Petrie expressed the opinion that the tide had definitely turned, ami although the depression was still being-felt to some extent in the Homeland, there was a much more optimistic tone. The iron and steel trade in particular was showing more business and was deriving much benefit from the recently-imposed tariffs. Just before he left England, Mr. Petrie said there seemed to be plenty of money available for amusements. Theatres and pictures houses were packed and sporting fixtures were well patronised. During the trip most parts of England and Scotland were visited; in fact. Mr. and Mrs. Petrie went north as far as the Orkney Islands. “These islands arc cold and devoid of trees.” he said, “yet they are renowned for the quality of their cattle.” Both he and Mrs. Petrie speak most highly of the hospitality with which they were received everywhere in the Old Country.
