DEBATING CONTEST
Baptist Bible Class v. Y.M.C.A. ■ z. * .; ■■■s; ■ ■ . -- -j ; A debate was conducted on Thursday evening at the Y.M.C.A., the contesting teams being the Vivian Street Baptist Young Men’s Bible Class and the Y.M.C.A. Parliamentary Union. The subject was, “That the capitalist system cannot solve the economic situation.” The Baptist team, Messrs. G. Ivory, B. Wood, and S. Eade, moved the resolution, and spoke vigorously in its support, but the Y.M.C.A. team, Messrs. H. A. Hutchinson, C. M. P. Brown, and J. H. Reaney, argued to the negative with sufficient force to gain the judge’s verdict by the narrow margin of 241 points to 237. The judge, Mr. Byron Brown, in his summing up, gave many valuable hints to the speakers, and awarded individual honours of the evening to Mr. G. Ivory, with Mr. 0. M. P. Brown in second place. Mr. R. P. Staples occupied the chair. The debate was a departure from the usual meeting of the Y.M.C.A. Parliamentary Union, which will resume in “parliamentary” session on August 18.
