A remarkable instance of dryness was at the Walho Gorge Hotel, Westland, where rain fell on one day only and the total was 0.15 in. This is only one-hundredth of the July average of 15in. Temperatures in the North Island averaged 3 degrees below the usual figure. An unusual feature was that at Reefton and in the Upper Wairau, where some swift-running streams were frozen over. Water-pipes were frozen In many places in the interior. Sunshine figures were above the July average everywhere, and Nelson had the remarkable total of 194.3 hours.
