JULY WEATHER
Sun and Little Wind VERY DRY MONTH “July was a very dry month; probably the driest July on record,” states a report on weather conditions throughout the .Dominion issued yesterday by Dr. E. Kidson, Director of Meteorological Services. The survey states that temperatures were much , below the average, particularly in the North Island, but this was offset by an abundance of sunshine and an unusual absence of wind. .Rainfall above the average was recorded only in Southland, and Invercatgill had six per cent, above the average. : Nelson had rain on only three days and the total was only 10 per cent, of the normal for July. A remarkable instance of dryness was at the Walho Gorge Hotel, Westland, where rain fell on one day only and the total was 0.15 in. This is only one-hundredth of the July average of 15in. Temperatures in the North Island averaged 3 degrees below the usual figure. An unusual feature was that at Reefton and in the Upper Wairau, where some swift-running streams were frozen over. Water-pipes were frozen In many places in the interior. Sunshine figures were above the July average everywhere, and Nelson had the remarkable total of 194.3 hours. Blenheim recorded 186.3 hours and Hokitika had 160.4 hours of sunshine.
