Humour predominated in ■ the Items, which ranged from burlesque operettas to dainty ballets, .the performers being' strictly limited to the ' male hex, in accordance with/establlsh: ed custom. - The programme opened, with' the in-, stallation,of. his. Excellency, the Govj ernor-General, Lord Bledisloe, as. Ariki Nui, by' Chief Savage J. J. McGrath. His Excellency’s speech, which was set . do.wn later in the programme, was officially designated “Te Whaikorero a Te" Ariki Nui.” . /.His Excellency said that the present conference at Ottawa- recalled to his mind a very interesting tour which he took six’years ago In company with his colleagues of r the British Association through Canada and, the United Stated. In a very, happy , strain, his Excellency described a number of interesting incidents that happened during the tour, including memorable meetings with Charlie Chaplin, President Calvin Coolidge, and other prominent personages. !. Two prominent items on the programme were two “Savage Operas,’ books and lyrics being by Savage A. ' A. Paterson; These were extremely popular with the audience, and their moments of subtle wit caused a great deal of merriment.
